Mercury News Endorsement

OK. Here it is. The San Jose Mercury News has released it's endorsements in the 11th CD primary races. They picked an all Irish team, McCloskey and McNerney. Great for the fighting Irish.

Now, let's see how many ways our fans can spin this one. I won't try, except to say that I loved the McCloskey endorsement. They got through the entire piece without using any improper "labeling" of the candidates.

Gee, a respect for truth in labeling. Something that Pombo does not understand.

Yo Delta,

So Adrian sez to me, she sez, "Rocky, you can have anudder cup of Joe, cuz I gotta take Paulie to get a haircut."

So I check back in, cuz well you know, its fun to see your name in print, and here's dis post from a guy (gurl?) named "Delta." What kind of person calls him or herself DELTA? Where do you guys come up wid names like dis? Why not jist use your real name like Rocky does?

Anyways, dis is very interesting cuz it sorta prooves Rocky's point don't it? The only two guys who realize who the target really is - McNerney and McClosky - are getting endorsed by the big time newspapers.

Yo Ricky - you punk. Are you gonna twist this one around too and say Pretty Boy Steve didn't want this endorsement either? Or are you gonna show a little class and say sumtin nice about Jerry?

Even Apollo paid me a compliment after I knocked his lights out - you can redeem yerself here, but somehow I suspect your sitting around packaging up more shit to throw at someone. LOSER!

Rocky out.
PS: What ever happened to the cheapskate $.02? Rocky hope he didn't shame him wid his generosity. Even if he was cheap, he at least had a good head on his shoulders. Yo $.02 - you out there?

Let's see, we have not heard from Filson or McNerney supporters today? Well, here is both:

Filson supporter says: "That is just one paper that barely even covers any part of the district. South County, big wow. We still have a chance to get the Stockton Record and CC Times endorsements! Besides we have Pelosi, Tauscher, Miller, Machado, and all the other IMPORTANT endorsements."

McNerney supporter: "This is another landmark in Jerry's incredible, against-the-odds, March-to-Victory. We have just taken Iwo Jima and are own our way to nuking Filson-shima, beating those DCCC mf'ers once and for all!"

As for me, I will just stick with clapping my hands that the Merc endorsed McCloskey over Pombo. That seems pretty significant to me.

VPO - I agree with you! I think it is incredible to have friends like the Merc that will endorse ANYONE over Pombo. I like how they dismissed the anti-semite charges against pete with a waive of their hand. (not like Jews will vote in a Republican primary anyways!)I dont know what Pombo did to them... but I like it!

YES! YES! YES! Bomb Filson-shima! Nuke Tauscher-shima! Obliterate Rahm-asaki!

But if you can't actually get around to that... just think about what it would be like having an independent-minded congressman, not beholden to any political bosses of either side. Imagine having a visionary whose motivation for running is to actually do some good for the district and the nation-- instead of for his family and campaign donors.

This may have been discussed before, but I'm wondering-- and asking with respect-- are the McCloskey supporters here at SNTP committed to supporting Jerry McNerney if Pombo wins the Republican primary?

DWT - Absofu&*%lutely!!!!! Your talking about Hanoi Pete here. Of course he will support McNerknee if he loses. He has always supported the Democrats. You got this one in the bag. Heck, he's doing his best to support him now.
I bet you his former intern, er, I mean wife will work hard for him too!

Anon, if you actually read DWT's post, he asked what McCloskey supporters would do, not what McCloskey would do.

But beyond that, about McCloskey, I think you are wrong. After the primary, McCloskey will be a good loyal Republican and support Pombo. Why not? He realizes the the country needs more wars and that Halliburtion is not getting enough profits. He is all set finanically, so why should he worry about the poor, or even the middle-class for that matter? We don't need clean air or clean water, and all those forest should be cut down. The parks, at least the ones that aren't sold off, should have advertising, 7-11's, and snowmobiles or ATV's throughout them. I am sure McCloskey will also push for the restarting of commerical whaling. And the deficit? He will want to make that even larger, while giving more tax breaks to the wealthy and billions in subsidies to the oil industry. I know McCloskey is just dying to get in to those Alex Spanos/Dick Cheney fundraisers.

So why wouldn't he be a "good Republican" and support Pombo?

ANON here. Sorry VPO. Your right that you were talking about McClumpsy's supporters. I guess I should have listed one of the three that lives in the district. My mistake.
I agree with you on the rest as well. As long as some lazy reporter with as much work ethic as a Filson volunteer (sic) is willing to snap a photo of him or stick I mike next to those booze shriveled lips, he will do anything. He just wants to be relevant. Can’t blame the old bastard though. Right now his tomb stone is going to have a big asterisk on it. Tried to run for US senate, tried to run for President, Tried to elect Kerry, Tried to convince people that he had a purpose in congress...."He tried, He failed, He died."
Stranger things have happened though. your right... has all the money he needs form the ol' house bank and all those speaking engagements that he use to pocket ten's of thousands of dollars from.... yea the good old days. When a congressman could actually earn a few extra million buck! Those were the good old days... before those damn Republicans took over and shut everything down. Sucked the fun out of the joint quicker than Pelosi could screw up a wet dream. Damn them all! Time to clean up Congress and return the Republican party where it use to be. Hell, they were in the minority but got to have so much fun

For some perspective:

- The San Jose Mercury News circulation area is primarily limited to Santa Clara County. Outside of Morgan Hill, this endorsement has little traction.

- The Merc has a history of taking rather quixotic political stands. Recall, they called on Clinton to resign in 1998 after the Lewinsky scandal emerged, and later withdrew that position. In 2000, they backed Jim Cuneen (R) over Mike Honda (D) for Tom Campbell's seat on the grounds that the Bay Area should have at least one Republican member of Congress. (I should note Honda ultimately won.) A few months back, the Merc called for the resignation of San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales because of some relatively minor dealings related to a garbage contract. Now they've endorsed McCloskey (who is really running as a Democrat) in the Republican primary.

- Newspaper political endorsements usually don't sway elections. John Kerry ran way ahead of Bush in major newspaper endorsements. Nearly every major California newspaper opposed the 2003 recall of Gray Davis. On top of that, you could go through the 2005 and 2005 local newspaper endorsements and find that they endorsed a number losing candidates and ballot measures. In short, newspaper endorsements are not necessarily a barometer of voter preferences.

- Finally (if you'll indulge me), isn't this a blog? Aren't blogs taking over and replacing the MSM? Isn't newspaper circulation dropping like a rock? I thought blogs vanquished newspapers a long time ago.

Sure, I would rather than Filson have the Merc endorsement than McNerneny. But the evidence suggests that it won't have much influence.
