Margee Ensign Filed Her Papers

I just got confirmation from Margee Ensign (via e-mail) that she's officially a candidate in this race. This means that she's moved past the exploratory committee stage, and a good thing too given the time constraints that she faces. I don't have much to add at this point, but I do want to note that I've now added her to the ActBlue Page.

You can use the comment section as an open thread.

Interesting. Do you know if she is going to have a public announcement/press conference with supporters, etc? There's nothing on her web site...

That might mean she raised some serious money in the short time since her Nov. 17 announcement forming the exploratory committee. She said she could raise $100K in a short time, and maybe this indicates that she has, since the purpose of an exploratory committee is to see if there is enough dough out there to bake a campaign cookie.

Hi Matt
Just found your blog. I'm so excited to see that someone is so serious about getting rid of Pombo that you actually have a blog about it!

VPO,

Ensign hinted to me that the reason she officially changed her status to "candidate" was because of legal advice given on the basis of the money she has raised. That said, FEC rules, if I understand correctly, require the formation of a candidate committee after $5,000 is raised.

Of course, she could have formed a candidate committee called Friends of Margee Exploratory Committee for all the FEC cares. It would have legally been the same as if it were called (as I believe it is) Margee Ensign for Congress. Then she could have simply changed the name of the committee when she decided to be a real candidate.

Given that she has represented herself as an able fundraiser, it's odd that she would have announced the formation of an exploratory committee if it was only supposed to exist until she raised $5,000. I'd had thought she'd have formed a candidate committee, which politically would have still allowed her to keep her options opened.

I'm hoping I'm missing something and this isn't a reflection of a potential tone-deafness on Ensign's part to the politics, as opposed to the policy, side of the race. Announcing the formation of an exploratory committee so late in the race only seemed politically sensible if she really wasn't sure if she was going to run against Pombo. If all she was doing was announcing her intention to run provided she raised $5,000, she ought to have simply announced her candidacy full stop. Alternatively, she might have not known the FEC rules, which is not necessarily a more appealing prospect.

or it could mean that she was having difficulty raising money. if you have a created a pattern of hesitation (and backing out of the race) people might be reluctant to once again support you. anyone else find her explenation (ie, there isnt a dem base to help me) for not running last time a bit interesting?

so she knew which oppurtunties she had to deal with but instead of solving them she backed out. interesting....

Nicholas,

I don't know about her area code, but I do know that I wouldn't have chosen a number where the first three numbers are 666. She should have seen whether she could get 1-800-66-ENSIGN or some other number that did not include ths Sign of the Beast. But maybe that's just me.

oh my stars!!! im currently attending the Wellstone Action Campaign Manager training and I think I just woke up the entire wing of my hotel.

Speaking of which, this campaign training is awesome. Theres about 100 seasoned campaing managers (from Senatorial to City Board), direct mail, marketing, message and field experts helping Jerry's campaign this week. We are all bouncing ideas back and forth on how to effectively get our collective candidates elected. Its awesome!!! And these are folks that have proven success getting Governers, Senators, Congresspersons elected.

I got to tell them all this story. (I'll make sure not to mention the candidates name.)

In case you're wondering - that is a free voicemail number from k7.net that we're using to get voicemail emailed to us so we can take podcast comments easily and respond to them. The campaign line is 209-938-9699. We're working on getting our PBX services setup and we will have a local number for that instead of the K7 one.

Furthermore, I promise you all that none of the staff nor volunteers has that tatooed on our right hands or foreheads. Matt, you can certainly validate that she does not speak like a dragon or have horns like a sheep, right? ;)

Scott

Yes, I'll vouch for her. She does not speak like a dragon (unless dragons speak like UOP professors, in which case she's out of luck) or have any visible tattoos of 666, l33t, or any other mark of the devil.

Scott, welcome to the site.

(Note: I deleted my previous comment, which said substantially the same thing, but not as clearly).

i dont think the issue here is support for the devil...imho.

this is going to be a tuff raise for all three candidates. the smallest factors are going to come in play. people are reading and dissecting every lil thing that each candidate (or their staff)does.

trust me, i learned the hard way..

good luck scott, to you and to margee.
